With the new energy policy, the government of Rwanda presents a number of attractive incentives to private sector to invest in the generation of electricity so as to contribute to reducing the power deficit.
It is in this spirit that RMT decided to seize the opportunity and invest in a Micro Hydro power plant in Giciye Sector, Nyabihu District.
The Giciye Power Plant I, a property of RMT, took four years to complete and generates 4MW that is powered into the national grid. H.E Paul Kagame, the President of the Republic of Rwanda, inaugurated the Power Plant on June, 5th 2014. This investment is in the framework of increasing electricity access in Rwanda.
RMT’s Giciye Power Plant was an eye opener to a number of independent power producers who are increasingly participating in energy generation projects. Through a Memorandum of Understanding and PPA (Power Purchase Agreement), the Government of Rwanda supported RMT in constructing a 4KM access road and building transmission lines to evacuate the power from the plant to the national grid.
The residents of Nyabihu District are currently benefitting electricity from the plant, especially Rurembo Centre whereby 200 residential customers, 12 years basic education (12YBE) Primary school, a Health Centre, SACCO office, Parish and Rurembo Administrative Office are all connected and lit as a result of this development.
