Mata Tea Company Ltd Recognized for Gender Equality and Accountability

The company director, Mr. Emmanuel Kanyesigye, was recognized by UN women representative in Rwanda Fatou Lo.

Mata Tea Company Ltd, a subsidiary of Rwanda Mountain Tea (RMT) Ltd, was recognized by the Gender Monitoring Office in Rwanda on March 30th, 2021 at Serena hotel. This was during an event that was organized by the Gender Monitoring Office and the Private Sector Federation in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and UN Women.

Mata Tea Company Ltd has ensured that it has all facilities available for the tea pluckers such as the Early Childhood Development Centers (ECD’s). The ECD’s welcome children from the ages 1-4 where they are catered for, fed, and have their health monitored daily.

Mata Tea Company Ltd.’s efforts have led to increased production for the women from an average of 40 kilos to 70 kilos of tea. The women who work for Mata Tea Company Ltd are very happy with the company’s support for their wellbeing and of their children.

Mr. Kanyesigye mentioned that they currently have 2 ECD centers and currently host 70 children with the numbers expected to rise. “We are proud to be recognized for our work. We care for our tea pluckers and ensure that we provide all the support we can to improve their livelihoods.”

The community around Mata Tea Company Ltd has experienced high numbers of malnourished children. However, since the arrival of the company’s ECD’s, the numbers have significantly gone down while the children receive quality education.
