Rwanda Mountain Tea (RMT) Ltd is among the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in Rwanda, specialized in investment mini hydropower generation.

One of the objectives of RMT is to diversify its investment portfolio by venturing in sectors that have far reaching socioeconomic impact to the wellbeing of Rwandans. Indeed, energy is key driver of economic development.

Given the favorable policy and regulatory framework in the energy sector in Rwanda, RMT has consistently ventured in hydropower generation that it powers into the national grid. From Giciye I HPP, which generates 4 MW to Giciye II HPP which generates additional 4 MW, RMT also rehabilitated Rugezi HPP and Gihira HPP which generate 2.6 MW and 1.8 MW respectively.

In total, RMT Ltd now generates over 12 MW into the national grid. In the same breadth, construction of Giciye III HPP is underway, expected to power 7.2 MW into the national grid.

In total, RMT Ltd now generates over 20 MW into the national grid.

RMT hydropower generation projects have had positive impact to communities, such as creation of employment opportunities, construction of access roads, quicker electricity connections that have enhanced economic activities.
