Kitabi Tea Factory

Located in the Southern Province, Nyamagabe District, along the northern boundary of the Nyungwe natural forest, at 2,300 meters above sea level. Kitabi tea plantations sit on rich drained soils, of which 850 hectares belong to the Outgrowers belonging to KOBACYAMU cooperative and 800 hectares to RMT.

The forest occupies 540 hectares of land located in and around the tea plantations. Total annual green leaf production of KTF stands at over 12Million Kgs picked from both Industrial blocks and Outgrowers plantations. Whereas total annual production of Made teas (Black CTC) of KTF is about 3Million Kgs. The factory provides a safe professional working environment to its employees, focusing on the welfare of the workers, and support to neighbouring tea communities.

Kitabi employs 4,022 people directly as Managers, factory engineers and technicians, Agronomists, cleaners and Pluckers. It also indirectly benefits 4,725 people belonging to the KOBACYAMU Cooperative, because it buys its green leaf. The strategic business partnership between Kitabi and Outgrowers cooperatives has ensured improved and sustainable green leaf production. KTF extends support to Outgrowers in a number of ways, including; agronomy services and supply of fertilizers and inputs on flexible repayment terms.

The company complies with environmentally friendly procedures set by REMA (Rwanda Environment Management Authority) and its plantations and production system are regularly audited and certified. Such certifications include: Pesticides Residue Certificate, ISO 22000:2005 food safety management systems, Rainforest alliance certification and Organic NOP and EOS certifications.

Because of its supreme quality of made teas, Kitabi has won a number of accolades at tea conventions, including: the best overall black tea quality tea, best black CTC category Dust1 tea grade and best BP1 tea grade awards at the 2nd East Africa Tea Convention and Exhibition (2013), Best BP1 at the 6th North American Tea Cupping (2015) in San Antonio, Texas.
