Corporate Social Responsibility

Rwanda Mountain Tea (RMT) Ltd gives back to communities in different ways. The investments both in the tea and energy sectors have positively impacted on livelihoods of thousands of Rwandans not only through employment creation but also provision of other social amenities.

In the surroundings of Kitabi Tea Factory, RMT has built a Technical and Vocational Education Training School in Ruhingi Sector that has benefited children of residents. These children are taught skills that help them earn a decent living.

At Rubaya Tea Factory, in Muhanda Sector, a primary school was built by RMT for children of tea Outgrowers, which is also accessible to local populations.
RMT is an active player in the Government poverty alleviation program dubbed ‘Girinka’. The Program provide vulnerable families with cows as tokens of appreciation during the annual farmers day.

The bigger the tea plantation sizes the higher the yield. RMT supports Outgrowers members in expanding their plantations. In this regards, RMT has partnered with a UK buyer to provide the necessary tea farming skills to Outgrowers as well as the much needed tea seedlings for multiplication in their nurseries. RMT provides tea farmers with fertilizers at subsidized prices and favorable payment terms.

In hydropower generation sites, access roads that were paved in partnership with the Government of Rwanda have benefited residents to access markets, schools, hospitals and public services. Giciye that used to be a very remote area is now buzzing with business. Giciye residents’ income and livelihoods have improved tremendously.

All employees that worked on both projects were supported by RMT to subscribe to health insurance schemes.

Other notable CSR initiatives by RMT include;

• Construction of Water Reservoirs in Kitabi, Nyamagabe, Rubaya and Ngororero
• Supply of Solar Energy in Kitabi
• Construction of a Shaba health centre (a partnership between RMT and Taylors of Harragate)
• Contribution to Bye Bye Nyakatsi Program
